On This Day (30 Aug) in 1596, George Gower was buried in the churchyard of St Clement Danes, London.
The burial records from the church document the burial of "Mr Gower Sergeant paynter to her Majestie".
Gower's career appears to have begun in the 1570s, and was later appointed as 'Serjeant Painter' to Elizabeth I in 1581. This role made him responsible for the maintenance and commissioning of paintings and furnishings in royal residences, as well as providing him with access to paint members of the court/nobility.Gower has been credited with the portraits of Lettice Knollys, Countess of Leicester, and her sister Elizabeth, Lady Leighton.
