Early medieval stone castle built in market town of Framlingham, Suffolk.

.Location of Mary Tudor's 'base' where she launches successful bid to claim English throne following death of half-brother Edward VI in Jul 1553.
Location of St Michael the Archangel Church - traditional burial place of Howard family, including Margaret Audley, Duchess of Norfolk.

KEY EVENTS 

Feb 1540 - Body of Henry FitzRoy, Henry VIII's illegitimate son (and brother to ELIZABETH TAILBOYS) is moved to St Michael the Archangel Church, Framlingham, following the dissolution of Thetford Priory, where he had been buried following his death in Jul 1536.

1552 - Framlingham Castle comes is granted to Mary Tudor by half-brother EDWARD VI, it had been confiscated from Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, following an Act of Attainder. 

04 Jul 1553 - Having arrived at her manor of Hundson, near London end of Jun 1553, she suddenly fled north, initially to Cambridge, likely after finding out news of EDWARD VI's pending death and John Dudley's plans for her arrest.. Later moved towards her property in Norfolk. 

06 Jul 1553 - Death of EDWARD VI at Palace of Placentia, Greenwich; his death is not publicly announced until 10 Jul, whilst Lord President of his Regency Council JOHN DUDLEY starts putting his 'Devise to my Succession' in motion, having identified JANE GREY as his successor over Mary Tudor. 

07 Jul 1553 - JOHN DUDLEY sent son ROBERT DUDLEY (and 300 men) to try and apprehend Mary Tudor; initially headed to Hundson, and then onto Kenninghall on 09-10 Jul 1553.

09 Jul 1553 - Mary Tudor arrives in Kenninghall, having alluded capture by JOHN DUDLEY's Privy Council.
Disputes claim of JANE GREY, instilling her own claim for the throne.

10 Jul 1553 -JANE GREY is proclaimed Queen of England, following death of EDWARD VI on 06 Jul 1553.

 

12 Jul 1553 - Lady Mary arrives at Framlingham Castle, having quickly moved from Cambridgeshire and Kenninghall; launches own claim for English throne and call for support (forces start to gather at castle).

 

13 Jul 1553 - Mercenary forces recruited by JOHN DUDLEY to support JANE GREY's claim leave London for Norfolk.

18 Jul 1553 - JOHN DUDLEY and his forces march from Cambridge towards Framlingham Castle; met at Newmarket by messenger with news re: abandonment of support for JANE GREY's claim, including from Privy Council. Reaches Bury St Edmunds, but withdraws back to Cambridge.
 

19 Jul 1553 - Lady Mary proclaimed as MARY I, Queen of England by Privy Council in London.

20 Jul 1553 - MARY I, having not heard word of the proclamation the previous day, rode out of Framlingham Castle in the afternoon, rallying her supporters. 
Sir William Paget and Henry FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel arrive at Framlingham Castle, and are granted an audience with Mary I in the afternoon; on behalf of the Privy Council, they formerly offer her the English Crown. 

?21 Jul 1553 - ROBERT DUDLEY is captured in King's Lynn, and is brought infront of Mary I at Framlingham Castle. He is soon transported to London, and admitted to the Tower of London, where he is held along with his 4 brothers in the Beauchamp Tower. 

24 Jul 1553 - MARY I leaves Framlingham Castle; arrives in London on 03 Aug 1553 after being proclaimed as Queen of England.

Jul 1553 - Thomas Howard is pardoned and released from Tower of London; retires to Kenninghall, with Framlingham Castle being subject to long lease.

25 Aug 1554 - Thomas Howard dies at Kenninghall; is succeeded by grandson Thomas, 4th Duke of Norfolk, who inherits his estates, including Framlingham Castle. He is buried at St Michael the Archangel Church, Framlingham, just outside the walls of the castle. 

09 Jan 1564 - Death of MARGARET AUDLEY in Norwich - she is initially buried at St John the Baptist Church, Norwich, but remains soon removed and buried to St Michael the Archangel Church, Framlingham. 

02 Jun 1572 - Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk is executed at the Tower of London, for his role in the Ridolfi plot; his property is confiscated, and Framingham is returned to the crown.
