DUDLEY CASTLE

12th century stone castle, in Dudley (now West Midlands).
Ownership taken on by John Dudley in 1537.

From 1540 oversaw major building project, headed by architect Sir William Sharington - 'Sharington Range'.
 

KEY EVENTS 

1537 - JOHN DUDLEY took on ownership of Dudley Castle from relative John Sutton, 1st Baron Dudley (who had inherited in 1532), due to financial difficulties

1540 - commencement of series of new buildings within old castle complex overseen by JOHN DUDLEY - known as 'Sharington Range
after architect William Sharington

1553 - execution of JOHN DUDLEY after being convicted of high treason; ownership of Dudley Castle transferred back to Sutton family by Mary I

1575 - visit to Dudley Castle by Elizabeth I - consideration as location of possible imprisonment for Mary, Queen of Scots
