CHEYNES

Also known as 'Cheynes Palace'; now known as 'Chenies Manor House'.
Tudor Manor House in Buckinghamshire; in 1530s rebuilt original house from 1460s.
Inherited by Anne Sapcote, later wife of John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford, 

Became the seat of the Earls of Bedford from mid 16th century until the 17th century, when seat was moved to Woburn Abbey,
Place of birth of Anne Russell in Dec 1548, later the Countess of Warwick.
Location of St Nicholas' Church in which the Bedford Chapel is located - place of burial and interment of many members of Russell family members, including Anne Russell. 

KEY EVENTS
 

c.1460 - Original Manor House built by Sir John Cheyne, on land granted to Cheyne ancestor in late 13th century.

1494 - ANNE SAPCOTE's paternal grandmother Anne Semark inherits Cheynes through her aunt, Agnes wife of Sir John Cheyne; will was initially contested, but upheld.  

1510 - Death of Anne Semark (son Sir Guy Sapcote had died before her); ANNE SAPCOTE inherits Cheynes. 

1526 - Marriage of JOHN RUSSELL to ANNE SAPCOTE (Anne's 3rd marriage); Cheynes comes into the possession of the Russell family. 

1530 - JOHN RUSSELL granted nearby manor of Amersham by Henry VIII; uses funds to rebuild at Cheynes. 

Aug 1533 - Henry VIII visits JOHN RUSSELL at Cheynes with a pregnant Anne Boleyn; a week later they returned to London, and Anne went into confinement ready for birth. 

Summer 1534 - Henry VIII visits JOHN RUSSELL at Cheynes on progress. 


1539 - JOHN RUSSELL created 'Baron Russell of Cheynes'.

1541 - Henry VIII visits Cheynes with wife Katherine Howard; she is later accused of adultery with Thomas Culpepper, and evidence is submitted of this whilst staying at Cheynes. 

Late Dec 1548 - Birth of ANNE RUSSELL at Cheynes, eldest daughter of FRANCIS RUSSELL

14 May 1555 - Death of JOHN RUSSELL in London.

1556 - Construction of the Bedford Chapel in St Michael's Church, overseen by ANNE SAPCOTE in accordance with late husband JOHN RUSSELL's will. John Russell later interred in the chapel following completion and consecration. 

14 Mar 1559 - Death of ANNE SAPCOTE in London; is later buried in Bedford Chapel in St Michael's Church, Chenies. Manor House is inherited by son FRANCIS RUSSELL, who makes it his primary residence.

19 Jul - 14 Aug 1570 - Queen Elizabeth I has a prolonged visit to Cheynes, as part of her summer progress.

28 Jul 1585 - Death of FRANCIS RUSSELL in London; is later buried in Bedford Chapel in St Michael's Church, Chenies. 

24 May 1591 - Death of Robert Clifford, younger son of MARGARET CLIFFORD at Northaw, Hertfordshire; 
is later buried in Bedford Chapel in St Michael's Church, Chenies.

12 Jan 1601 - Death of FRANCIS RUSSELL's widow Bridget Hussey at Woburn Abbey; she is buried in Bedford Chapel, St Michael's Church, Chenies. Her will lists Cheynes as being "unfurnished and unoccupied".

Feb 1601 - FRANCIS RUSSELL's grandson Edward Russell, 3rd Earl of Bedford arrested for his part in the failed 'Essex Rebellion'; was fined £10,000 and placed on house arrest at Cheynes. 

04 Feb 1604 - Death of ANNE RUSSELL at home in Northaw, Hertfordshire; is later buried in Bedford Chapel in St Michael's Church, Chenies.

03 Jun 1630 - Marriage of ANNE CLIFFORD to second husband Phillip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke, at St Michael's Church, Chenies.
