CHELSEA MANOR

Tudor manor house in Chelsea, London, also known as 'Chelsea Place'.

Ownership received by Katherine Parr in 1547, following death of Henry VIII - resided at Chelsea with Princess/Lady Elizabeth (for a time), until Summer 1548 prior to her death.

John Dudley took ownership from 1551.

Jane Grey was residing at Chelsea in Jul 1554, when she was summoned to Syon House.

Jane Guildford died here in 1555, this property not being confiscated following her husband's execution in 1553.

KEY EVENTS

1536 - Henry VIII takes ownership of Chelsea Manor; had previously been sold to Sir Reginald Bray in 1485.

14 May 1536 - JANE SEYMOUR moved to Chelsea Manor following arrest of Anne Boleyn, and breakup of her household.

20 May 1536 - Henry VIII arrives at Chelsea Manor, the day after Anne Boleyn's execution; becomes betrothed to JANE SEYMOUR, and dines with her and her family, including EDWARD SEYMOUR


1536-1548 - Residence of Princess Elizabeth (as 'Lady Elizabeth' as had been deemed illegitimate) and her household.

1543 - Ownership of Chelsea granted to KATHERINE PARR "for life...as part of her jointure" - begins to set up a household.


Jan 1547 - Death of King Henry VIII; widow KATHERINE PARR continues to reside primarily at Chelsea, with Princess/Lady Elizabeth remaining under the guardianship of her stepmother until Jun 1548.

May 1547 - Secret marriage of KATHERINE PARR and THOMAS SEYMOURJANE GREY starts spending time at Chelsea, being a ward and member of Seymour's household at Seymour Place, before moving into the manor and joining Katherine's household.

Jun 1548 - Pregnant KATHERINE PARR leaves Chelsea Manor, initially staying a short time at Haworth Manor, Middlesex, before moving her and husband THOMAS SEYMOUR's households to Sudeley Castle, Gloucestershire, accompanied by JANE GREY.

05 Sep 1548 - Death of KATHERINE PARR at Sudeley Castle; ownership of Chelsea Manor is left to husband THOMAS SEYMOUR.

20 Mar 1549 - Execution of THOMAS SEYMOUR; property (including Chelsea Manor) confiscated following conviction for treason and returned to the Crown.

1549 - JOHN DUDLEY, Duke of Northumberland comes into ownership of Chelsea Manor, bestowed by EDWARD VI.


1551 - JOHN DUDLEY surrenders Chelsea Manor to the Crown; son JOHN DUDLEY, 2nd Earl of Warwick comes into possession of Chelsea Manor.

1553 - Chelsea Manor again granted to JOHN DUDLEY and JANE GUILDFORD (in exchange for manor of Tunbridge).


Jun 1553 - JANE GREY requests to move to Chelsea Manor, from Durham House on the Strand; known to be 'ill' at this time (likely stress-related).

09 Jul 1553 - JANE GREY summoned from Chelsea Manor to Syon House; travels up river, accompanied by sister-in-law MARY DUDLEY.

20 Jul 1553 - JANE GUILDFORD released from Tower of London shortly following ascension of Mary I; appears to return back to Chelsea Manor.

1554 - Ownership of Chelsea Manor granted to JANE GUILDFORD "for life".

15 or 22 Jan 1555 - Death of JANE GUILDFORD at Chelsea Manor (different death dates given on inquisition postmortem and monument); was buried in The More Chapel at the nearby Chelsea Old Church.
Chelsea appears to have been granted to Anne of Cleves by Mary I, following the return of the manor to the Crown.


16 Jul 1557 - Death of Anne of Cleves, former Queen Consort of England (1540) at Chelsea Manor; she was buried in Westminster Abbey on 03 Aug 1557, with full Catholic rites (as per Mary I's wishes).

1559 - Chelsea Manor leased to ANNE STANHOPE "for life". 

16 Apr 1587 - Death of ANNE STANHOPE at Hanworth Palace, Middlesex; Chelsea Manor granted to kinsman John Stanhope esq. by Elizabeth I.

21 Mar 1603 - Burial of Catherine Carey [Howard], Countess of Nottingham, at Chelsea Old Church; a close confidant and kinswoman of Elizabeth I, she had died at Arundel House (formerly Seymour House) on 25 Feb 1603.

14 Aug 1620 - Death of Katherine Dudley [Hastings], Countess of Huntingdon at 'Chelsea'; she is later buried alongside her mother JANE GUILDFORD in The More Chapel at Chelsea Old Church.
